Normandy

Normandy
(Normandie)
Normandy was a former province of France that was given by Charles III the Simple to Rollo, the Norman, or Viking, leader (Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, 911), and was retaken from the English by King Philip Augustus in 1204. It was one of the main battlefields during the hundred years' war. The capital of Normandy is at Rouen, and the province comprises five departments: Orne, Seine-Maritime, Calvados, Eure, and Manche. It was the site of the Allied landing in 1944 (D Day) and the first province to be liberated, but also suffered great damage during World War II. Today, its major industries are textiles and tourism.
